Dr. Gilbert K. Boese became director until 1989.  He felt increasing attendance of the Milwaukee County Zoo was a top priority.  Boese felt strongly about enhancing the reputation of the Zoo, and wanted the Zoo to make significant contributions to protecting endangered species.  His dream list for the Zoo included expanding the Aquarium and Reptile Building and renovating the Primate Building.  Boese greatly enhanced the Zoo’s educational programs.
